Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) has introduced the Establishing Responsibility for Illegals’ Crimes and Adding Deterrence and Accountability for Mayors’ Sanctuary cities (ERIC ADAMS) Act in Congress. The bill seeks to hold mayors of sanctuary cities criminally responsible if a murder is committed by an illegal immigrant in their jurisdiction and the mayor failed to comply with federal immigration law enforcement.
The proposed legislation would impose penalties of up to seven years in prison on any mayor whose noncompliance with federal authorities leads to the murder of a U.S. citizen by an undocumented immigrant.
“Laken Riley and countless other loved ones could still be alive today if our immigration laws were respected by mayors of sanctuary cities. As far as I’m concerned, they have blood on their hands and should be held personally accountable for creating a lawless environment that allows criminal illegal aliens to commit murder,” said Rep. Carter.
Rep. Carter has been elected multiple times to represent Georgia’s 1st district, winning general elections against various opponents over the past decade. In 2024, he defeated Patti Hewitt with 62% of the vote; in 2022, he won against Wade Herring with just over 59%; in 2020, he prevailed over Joyce Griggs with more than 58%; in 2018, he beat Lisa Ring with nearly 58%; and in 2014, he won his seat by defeating Brian Reese with almost 61%.
