Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) announced that $65.7 million has been secured for the United States Army Corps of Engineers to support modification and maintenance projects at Georgia’s Port of Brunswick and Port of Savannah. The funding comes from the House-passed Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2026, which now moves to the Senate for consideration.

The funds are designated for several projects: $48.9 million will go to Savannah Harbor operation and maintenance, $16.3 million is allocated for Brunswick Harbor operation and maintenance, $500,000 is set aside for a Savannah Harbor deepening study, and final funding for the Brunswick Harbor Modifications Project will be provided through reprogramming.

Both ports are significant economic drivers in Georgia. The Port of Brunswick leads the nation in autos and heavy machinery roll-on/roll-off traffic, while the Port of Savannah is recognized as North America’s largest single-terminal container facility. In fiscal year 2024, these ports contributed to 11% of Georgia’s total sales, representing $174 billion.

“With investments in the Savannah and Brunswick ports, Georgia is poised to continue its streak of 11 consecutive years as the best state to do business,” said Rep. Carter. “Our ports aren’t just the lifeblood of the Southeast; they power the global economy. These strategic modifications and maintenance will strengthen Georgia’s economy, creating more jobs, boosting revenue, and solidifying our position as a trade leader.”

Rep. Buddy Carter has maintained strong electoral support in recent years. In 2024 he won reelection against Patti Hewitt with 62% of the vote; in previous cycles he defeated Wade Herring (59% in 2022), Joyce Griggs (58% in 2020), Lisa Ring (58% in 2018), and Brian Reese (61% in 2014).
