Chamber Member Services Coordinator Claudette Schomburg participated in Coastal Middle School’s Literacy Night alongside Bookworms United, a non-profit ed-tech company. The event is part of a broader initiative by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to enhance literacy among students.

At the event, Schomburg and Bookworms United hosted an interactive booth where students and parents used ChatGPT to create short stories and AI-generated artwork. This activity aimed to encourage creativity and engagement with new technology.

Bookworms United CEO Vern Tremble also conducted a focus group with members of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Schomburg previously served on the FCCLA state board of directors. During the session, more than 25 students learned about product development and building a minimum viable product. They also gave feedback on literacy technologies that are being developed for modern learners.

According to Bookworms United, the organization has worked with local middle schools before on initiatives such as the Level Up Reading Challenge and has launched an AI Academy that educates students about generative AI and safety. The group states it remains committed to narrowing the literacy gap through creative approaches, innovation, and partnerships within the community.
