FOIA Request to Georgia Southern University Regarding Chinese National Students on June 4, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the Savannah Standard have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Georgia Southern University. This request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

Our inquiry specifically requests documents or lists that reveal the number of current students who are Chinese Nationals, along with their respective departments of study. If privacy concerns necessitate redaction, we have asked for aggregated totals instead. Additionally, we are seeking information about scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. We have also requested details regarding any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, we are interested in understanding how Georgia Southern University monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard intellectual property and confidential information. As a media organization dedicated to transparency and accountability in public institutions, access to these records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities.

We believe that this request aligns with our mission as members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization that aids media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental actions through Freedom of Information laws. We anticipate that this request will enhance public understanding and oversight of educational policies related to international students.
