State Representative Carl Gilliard from Savannah witnessed the signing of two significant legislative acts by Governor Brian Kemp in Savannah. The Original 33 Memorial Act and the Savannah Music Commission Act have been officially enacted into law.

Rep. Gilliard commented on the importance of HB 303, the Original 33 Memorial Act, by stating, “Today is a powerful day with the signing of the Original 33 Memorial Act… The next step will be to begin the process of appointing members to the memorial committee in ensuring the success and completion of the monument.” This act permits the installation of a monument dedicated to the Original 33 Black legislators, who were expelled from the General Assembly following the Reconstruction era, at the State Capitol.

HB 762, known as the Savannah Music Commission Act, introduces a formal body to support Savannah’s music industry. This commission aims to promote musical events, support musicians, and foster collaboration among artists and venues. Rep. Gilliard said, “The Savannah Music Commission will open the floodgates for record companies with opportunities for economic development through supporting venues and music festivals… I am excited for our next steps, which will be to start the process of appointing members to the commission.”

Individuals seeking further information or wishing to engage with the initiatives may contact Rep. Gilliard. The full texts of HB 303 and HB 762 are made available for public consultation.
