State Representative Lee Hawkins, a Republican from Gainesville and chairman of the House Health Committee, has been appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns to lead the House Study Committee on Cancer Care Access. This announcement comes as part of an effort to address healthcare disparities in rural Georgia.
Hawkins expressed gratitude for the appointment, stating, “I am grateful to the House and Speaker Burns for continuing to prioritize health care for Georgians in rural parts of the state.” He emphasized that the committee will focus on understanding and addressing barriers faced by rural residents in accessing quality cancer care. The committee aims to improve early detection, expand screening efforts, and invest in medical workforce development. Hawkins added, “From exploring the economic impact of cancer care centers and working to strengthen medical education, my colleagues and I will be committed to ensuring that every Georgian has access to timely, effective and equitable cancer treatment.”
The study committee was established through House Resolution 72 with a mandate to evaluate current challenges in accessing quality cancer care and propose solutions. Speaker Burns has also appointed State Representatives Gerald Greene, Karen Mathiak, Deborah Silcox, and Jasmine Clark as members of the committee. Additionally, Dr. Jorge Cortes, Dr. Suresh Ramalingam, Dr. Chris Kiker, Kristin Higgins, and Jennie Wren Denmark will participate as non-legislative members.
