The Leadership Savannah Class of 2025 embarked on a day-long exploration of local government operations across various jurisdictions in June. The event aimed to provide participants with insights into the functioning of city, county, and municipal governments.
The day began with a panel discussion featuring members of the local delegation: Chairman Ron Stephens, Representative Edna Jackson, Representative Anne Allen Westbrook, and Senator Derek Mallow. They discussed the significance of collaboration between state and local governments and shared experiences from legislative sessions.
Participants visited Port Wentworth City Hall to learn about the development on Chatham County’s west side. Mayor Karen Williams of Pooler, Port Wentworth Mayor Pro Temp Gabrielle Nelson, and Port Wentworth City Manager Steve Davis provided perspectives on growth, infrastructure, and managing expanding communities.
The class then proceeded to the County Commission chambers where Chairman Chester Ellis greeted them. A panel consisting of city and county managers from Savannah, Chatham County, and Pooler emphasized cooperation and public service responsibilities.
The day concluded in Thunderbolt with discussions on governance in smaller municipalities. Tubby’s Tank House hosted a closing happy hour for participants to unwind after an informative day focused on community engagement.
Leadership Savannah aims to deepen understanding of regional policies, partnerships, and people through such initiatives.
