The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is seeking volunteers for its annual Flags for the Fallen event. This tribute honors the 26,000 airmen from the Eighth Air Force who lost their lives during World War II. The event, titled “Flags for the Fallen: 26,000 Flags | One Mission,” will commence on Friday, May 23rd at 10:30 am.
During this period, the museum’s Memorial Garden will be adorned with 26,000 American flags, each symbolizing a fallen airman. The display will be accessible to visitors until Monday, May 26th, providing an opportunity for reflection and remembrance.
Volunteers are required to assist in placing the flags on Wednesday, May 21st before the public opening. Participation is open to individuals, families, school groups, veterans, civic organizations, and businesses.
“This event is only possible because of the incredible support from our community,” stated Dawn Brosnan, Director of Communications and Marketing. “Volunteering for Flags for the Fallen is a profound way to honor those who never came home. Every flag you place is a name remembered, a story honored, a sacrifice acknowledged.”
Those interested in volunteering can contribute any amount of time they can spare. The effort ensures that these airmen are not forgotten.
Volunteer registration details and additional information about flag placement day are available online.
