State Representative Carmen Rice (R-Columbus) recently participated in the Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute (GLLI), joining other newly elected legislators from around the state. The event took place at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and Hotel in Athens.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute, which provided valuable insight into the challenges and responsibilities of representative government,” said Rep. Rice. “Learning directly from Speaker Jon Burns, Brad Vaughan and experts from the National Institute for Civil Discourse was an invaluable experience, and I look forward to applying those lessons as I serve my constituents. I appreciate the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation for supporting this program, which continues to strengthen and prepare lawmakers across our state to lead with integrity and effectiveness.”

The GLLI was established by the Georgia General Assembly Training Institute in 2005 as a forum for new lawmakers to examine leadership challenges alongside faculty from UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, legislative leaders, and colleagues. It forms part of broader leadership development initiatives aimed at members of the Georgia General Assembly.

This year’s program included sessions led by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), who has represented Georgia’s 159th House District since 2005 after succeeding Ray Holland https://www.house.ga.gov/representatives/en-US/member.aspx?Member=94&Session=27. Brad Vaughan, Legislative Director and Counsel for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, also addressed participants. Lawmakers engaged with representatives from the National Institute for Civil Discourse on best practices in public discourse.

The initiative is supported by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation and focuses on helping legislators develop personal and public leadership skills relevant to their roles as elected officials.

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government at UGA provides research, assistance, and professional development services for government leaders throughout Georgia.
