State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) was selected by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to participate in the 2025 Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute (GLLI), which took place at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.

“I’m incredibly honored to be nominated by Speaker Jon Burns and to have actively participated in the Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute,” said Rep. Herring. “This is a unique chance to deeply explore leadership in government and work with my colleagues on important state issues. I’m sure the insights and skills I gained will directly lead to more effective representation and outcomes for the people of Macon-Bibb and Monroe counties and for all Georgians.”

The event, held from July 31 through August 3, 2025, brought together select freshman legislators who were nominated by both Speaker Burns and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Participants attended interactive sessions, breakout discussions, and peer learning opportunities focused on legislative leadership.

During the program, Rep. Herring worked alongside faculty members, legislative leaders, and other participants. The curriculum aimed to help lawmakers develop personal, ethical, and political leadership skills so they can better serve their roles. Topics included personal motivations, leadership styles, ethical use of power, collective action strategies, policy analysis, citizen organization methods, and reflection on upholding democracy.

“The program’s focus on improving leadership and tackling complex policy issues is exactly what I needed to further my commitment to my constituents and to promote initiatives that build a better future for families across Georgia,” added Rep. Herring.

Since it began in 2005, GLLI has provided training in essential leadership skills for over 200 Georgia legislators. The three-and-a-half-day program is designed specifically for new lawmakers as they begin their terms in the General Assembly.

Burns has served as a Republican member of the Georgia State House since his election in 2005 representing District 159 after succeeding Ray Holland.
