The Savannah City Council has approved an urban camping ordinance, marking a significant step in addressing homelessness and enhancing public safety. This decision follows the County’s similar action last month.
The ordinance aims to keep public spaces safe and accessible while encouraging homeless individuals to seek available services. It was developed through collaboration among city officials, service providers, public safety agencies, and community leaders over several months.
“The Chamber was proud to play a role in that process, advocating for an approach that recognizes both the urgency of the issue and the need for compassion and dignity,” stated a representative from the Chamber. The organization emphasized the importance of leadership, dialogue, and commitment in achieving this outcome.
While acknowledging that this ordinance is not a complete solution, the Chamber sees it as a meaningful step forward. “We recognize this is just one piece of a much larger puzzle—but it is a meaningful and forward-moving piece,” they added. The Chamber plans to continue working with partners on long-term solutions for homelessness in Savannah.
“Thank you to all who contributed their time, insight, and energy to this effort. Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected community,” concluded the statement from the Chamber.
