The City of Savannah, under the leadership of Mayor Van R. Johnson II, is partnering with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to launch a new initiative called “Mayor Plays Ball.” This initiative is part of the broader Play Ball program and aims to increase youth participation in baseball.
Scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, at Grayson Stadium from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event targets boys and girls aged 5 to 12. It will include sandlot-style games, skill-building drills, and interactive activities designed to introduce children to baseball fundamentals while promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.
Participants will have the chance to interact with players and coaches from the Savannah Bananas organization. The exhibition league teams, including The Bananas, Party Animals, Firefighters, and Texas Tailgaters, will conduct instructional sessions and play games with the attendees.
After on-field activities conclude, participants will receive a complimentary lunch along with an icy treat from Kona Ice. An awards ceremony will also take place to recognize sportsmanship among attendees.
Registration can be completed online by parents or guardians. For more details about the event, Farrah Lawrence can be contacted at Farrah.Lawrence@savannahga.gov.
This free event is supported by various local organizations including Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care and Healthy Savannah alongside city departments such as Recreation and Leisure Services Department and Savannah Police Department’s Police Athletic League.
The Play Ball program was launched nationwide by MLB in collaboration with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to promote youth engagement in baseball through community-based events that emphasize enjoyment over competition.
Grayson Stadium is located at 1401 E Victory Dr., Savannah. The event welcomes children aged between 5-12 years old without any cost involved.
