With temperatures expected to soar, the City of Savannah and its partners are providing facilities for residents to escape the heat. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory with heat index values potentially reaching 111 degrees. This advisory will be in effect from 11:00 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sunlight, and check on family and neighbors. Children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles.
The city has opened several cooling centers and pools across Savannah for Tuesday, July 22. Community centers such as Delaware Center, Moses Jackson Neighborhood Center, Tompkins Regional Center, Windsor Forest Regional Center, and W.W. Law Regional Center will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
City pool hours at Bowles C. Ford, Daffin, W.W. Law, and Tompkins will be from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., then again from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Additionally, splashpads at locations including Hudson Hill and Forsyth Park will be open from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
For those experiencing homelessness, services are available at Union Mission from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Come As You Are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Salvation Army from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
An equine heat safety ordinance is being enforced by the City of Savannah when the heat index exceeds certain levels or temperatures reach specific thresholds. Horse-drawn carriages are prohibited under these conditions unless they can safely return to their stables or remain cool at their stands.
