Savannah opens cooling centers as heat index reaches dangerous levels

SAVANNAH – As the heat index is expected to reach between 112 and 118 degrees, the City of Savannah, in collaboration with partner agencies, is opening facilities to assist residents in staying cool. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory effective from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors. Children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

For those working or spending time outdoors, it is recommended to reschedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours and wear lightweight clothing.

City Cooling Centers and pools will be open on Sunday, July 27:

Community Centers:
– Tompkins Regional Center at 2333 Ogeechee Road from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
– W.W. Law Regional Center at 900 E. Bolton St. from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

City Pools:
– Bowles C. Ford at 1900 Stiles Ave., Daffin at 1301 E. Victory Dr., Tompkins at 2333 Ogeechee Road, and W.W. Law at 900 E. Bolton St., all open from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

City splashpads will also be available from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., including locations such as Hudson Hill, Hull Park, Crusader Park, Forrest Hills, Avondale Park, Victory Heights Park, Savannah Gardens, Forsyth Park, Tatemville, and Montgomery Crossroads.

Services for individuals experiencing homelessness will be provided by:
– Union Mission at 120 Fahm St., open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
– Come As You Are at 1900 Pennsylvania Ave., open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
– Salvation Army at 3100 Montgomery St., open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The City of Savannah is enforcing equine heat safety ordinances affecting local tour companies when the heat index exceeds certain levels or temperatures reach specified thresholds.
