Savannah opens cooling centers as temperatures soar

SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah, in collaboration with partner agencies, is opening facilities to help residents stay cool as heat index values could reach 109 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). A heat advisory has been issued and will remain in effect from 10:00 a.m. until 10 a.m. Sunday, July 27.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned rooms, avoid direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. People working or spending time outside are encouraged to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours and wear lightweight clothing.

City Cooling Centers and pools will operate with extended hours on Saturday, July 26:

Community Centers:
– Tompkins Regional Center at 2333 Ogeechee Road from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
– W.W. Law Regional Center at 900 E. Bolton St. from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

City Pools:
– Bowles C. Ford at 1900 Stiles Ave., open from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
– Daffin at 1301 E. Victory Dr., open from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
– Tompkins at 2333 Ogeechee Road from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m.
– W.W. Law at 900 E. Bolton St., open from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.& 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.

City splashpads will also be accessible throughout the day:

– Hudson Hill at 2227 Hudson St., Hull Park at 55th and Atlantic Ave., Crusader Park at 81 Coffee Bluff Villa Rd., Forrest Hills at Skidaway and Berkshire Rd., Avondale Park at Texas and Ohio Ave., Victory Heights Park at E 42nd St and Taskin Ave., Savannah Gardens at 516 Pennsylvania Ave., Forsyth Park at 10 Whitaker St., Tatemville at 333 Coleman St., Montgomery Crossroads at 401 W.Montgomery Crossroads; all operating from 9 a m–8 pm.

The city’s homeless service provider partners are also extending their services:

Furthermore,the City is actively enforcing equine heat safety ordinances affecting local tour companiesWhen the heat index exceeds110degrees (or when actual temperature reaches95degrees), horse-drawn carriages shall not operate on City streets Horses can either keep cool stand or return safely stableThe Office Special Events Film Tourism enforces these rules,and all local horse carriage tour businesses have received reminders regarding compliance
