In recognition of Smart Irrigation Month, the City of Savannah’s Water Resources Department is promoting water-wise habits. The department will provide information to the public and distribute automatic shut-off hose nozzles for free.

Smart Irrigation Month is an initiative by the Irrigation Association aimed at raising awareness about efficient irrigation technologies and practices. It encourages residents to use water wisely, emphasizing the social, economic, and environmental benefits.

City of Savannah Water customers can collect a free shut-off hose nozzle at several events. In collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget, these nozzles will be available during the July 12 Savannah Speak Out Budget event. Starting July 15, they can also be picked up at neighborhood community centers while supplies last.

July is typically one of Savannah’s hottest months, leading to increased residential water use. Smart irrigation practices aim to reduce this usage and alleviate pressure on infrastructure and resources.

The City of Savannah’s Water Resources Department advises residents to follow certain tips:

– Check weather forecasts before using irrigation systems.
– Use automatic shut-off hose nozzles to conserve five to seven gallons per minute.
– Water lawns before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., in accordance with Georgia law.
– Adhere to watering schedules based on address numbers.
– Regularly inspect for leaks and repair them promptly.
– Adjust sprinkler systems to prevent wasteful runoff.
– Install drip or micro-irrigation systems for efficient watering.
– Utilize rain barrels for garden watering needs.
– Plant native species that require less water.
– Apply mulch to retain soil moisture.

These practices aim to protect public health and ensure long-term water reliability. For more resources on conserving water efficiently, residents are encouraged to seek additional information.
