From February 1, 2023 post.

As Benedictine Military School celebrates Black History Month, we salute Mr. Galen Houston '04.

How did Benedictine Military School help to shape you?

“Attending Benedictine has continuously proven to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. As a student-athlete, BC allowed me to excel in a competitive environment where I was challenged daily, on and off the field. At Benedictine, I developed a foundation of integrity, leadership, service, work ethic and brotherhood. My alma mater provided me an opportunity to receive a great education, learn the fundamentals and habits necessary to become a collegiate athlete, and obtain a secondary degree in education! I enjoy serving a school, community, and brotherhood that has poured so much into my life immeasurably. I have matured so much as a person that I am able to have a positive influence and impact on the lives of young men because of Benedictine.”

Houston is the first Black head coach of a Benedictine Military School sports program (track and field). He also serves as the defensive coordinator of BC’s football team.

Houston was an all-region football player, team captain, team MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year at Benedictine. He also was the recipient of the district Bill Gaynor award, which is presented annually to the best student-athlete at BC. At Shaw University, Houston was the 2004 Defensive Rookie of the Year and led the football team to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. While completing his studies at Savannah State University, Houston began a coaching career at Savannah Christian and helped guide the football team to a GHSA Class A state championship game victory in 2011. He returned to BC in 2014 and has been instrumental in guiding the football team to GHSA state championship victories in 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2022. Houston earned a master’s degree in secondary mathematics from Armstrong University. He coached BC to track and field region championship victories in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. Houston is the son of Randy and Rhonda Houston, and has two sisters, Carisa and Camille. He is the proud father of Jayden Micah, a BC freshman.
