The City of Savannah has announced a series of Community-wide Engagement Sessions to discuss the future of the Savannah Civic Center site. According to the Office of Communications, the sessions aim to provide updates on technical analysis, cultural landscape analysis, survey, and archaeology assessment, and allow for community feedback on various aspects related to the site.
Stakeholder Meetings are scheduled for Thursday, April 25, where representatives from different sectors will participate. A Community-wide Open House is set for Tuesday, May 7, at the Civic Center Ballroom, followed by a Virtual Community Meeting tentatively planned for Thursday, May 16.
The Civic Center, constructed in 1972 on the site of the former Municipal Auditorium, plays a significant role in the Savannah National Historic Landmark District. Over the years, there have been discussions and recommendations regarding the site's future, including the possibility of demolishing the arena and constructing a new one elsewhere.
In 2019, the City sought input from the Urban Land Institute's Technical Assistance Panel, which recommended the removal of the entire Civic Center complex to restore elements of the Oglethorpe Plan. City Manager Joseph A. "Jay" Melder presented a conceptual plan in April 2022, outlining the demolition of the old arena while preserving certain parts of the complex and restoring sections of the Oglethorpe Plan.
Following City Manager Melder's presentation, the City Council directed a comprehensive review of options for the Civic Center site. The City has since been actively working on the project, conducting assessments and analyses to inform the public engagement process.
The upcoming Community-wide Engagement Sessions present an opportunity for stakeholders and community members to contribute their input and perspectives on the future use of the Civic Center site. The City Council will consider recommendations based on these sessions as they continue to explore the best path forward for this historically significant location.
