ATLANTA (April 25, 2024) – Sen. Derek Mallow (D–Savannah) shared his insights on the recent Orange Crush event, a long-standing tradition dating back to the 1980s. Mallow emphasized the importance of focusing on the positive aspects of the gathering despite isolated incidents.

Mallow stressed the economic benefits of Orange Crush, noting its positive impact on local businesses on Tybee Island and its role as a regional event for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to come together in Savannah.

The senator called for a shift in the narrative surrounding events like Orange Crush, advocating for independent attendance without reliance on promoters. He highlighted that this approach fosters empowerment among attendees, reduces burdens on taxpayers, and enhances collaboration between local government and citizens.

In terms of safety, Mallow underscored the need to prioritize the well-being of all participants, particularly college students. He proposed measures to prevent exploitation, ensure access to resources like indoor restroom facilities, and facilitate transportation throughout the city.

Mallow concluded by emphasizing the necessity of leadership and cooperation from individuals of diverse backgrounds to guarantee the ongoing success of Orange Crush. He expressed his commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration to support the future prosperity of the event.

Sen. Derek Mallow represents the 2nd Senate District, including a portion of Chatham County, and can be contacted at 404.656.7586 or via email at derek.mallow@senate.ga.gov.
