U.S. Attorney Jill E. Steinberg has announced her resignation from the Southern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office, effective January 17, 2025. Steinberg has served as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for the district since February 22, 2023.

Steinberg's resignation aligns with the transition to a new presidential administration, which traditionally appoints new leaders for federal agencies. "Serving as U.S. Attorney has been a distinct honor and privilege," said Steinberg, expressing gratitude for her colleagues' dedication.

During her tenure, Steinberg oversaw several significant cases and initiatives. The office concluded an investigation into unconstitutional conditions at Georgia’s state prisons and held individuals accountable for over $12 million in pandemic relief fraud. Other prosecutions included drug trafficking conspiracies and crimes involving illegal firearms possession.

One notable case was Operation Ghost Busted, addressing drug trafficking in Brunswick, Georgia. This operation resulted in sentences totaling over 4,000 months in prison for defendants affiliated with a white supremacist gang.

Steinberg also focused on protecting vulnerable citizens from sexual predators and prosecuted cases of financial fraud involving embezzlement and cryptocurrency scams. Her efforts extended to reviving the district’s Human Trafficking Task Force and supporting public education on related issues.

In addition to prosecuting criminal activities, Steinberg emphasized community education by visiting schools and civic groups to raise awareness about hate crimes enforcement and elder financial fraud among other topics.

Before her role as U.S. Attorney, Steinberg was a partner at Ballard Spahr LLP and served in various positions within the Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s Offices in Georgia.

"It is my hope that the citizens of the Southern District of Georgia will feel safer," stated Steinberg regarding her outreach efforts aimed at empowering informed citizens.

The Southern District of Georgia covers 43 counties with more than 1.6 million residents including cities like Savannah, Augusta, and Brunswick.
