The Visit Savannah Visitor Information Center team recently took a private tour of the historic Mickve Israel Synagogue in Savannah. This event was organized by Deanna Sorrells and featured a presentation and guided exploration led by synagogue docent Ellen Gerber.
Gerber provided an engaging narrative about Mickve Israel, highlighting its status as the third-oldest synagogue in the United States and the first to be built in Georgia. The staff learned about the congregation’s establishment in 1733 by Jewish immigrants who overcame early challenges to create a lasting community. The tour also included a visit to the on-site museum, which showcases artifacts and archives that trace the congregation’s evolution from its colonial beginnings to its current role in Savannah.
This experience aimed to deepen the Visitor Information Center team’s understanding of this landmark’s history, enhancing their ability to share Savannah’s cultural heritage with visitors. Such experiences are intended to improve storytelling skills and ensure that each visitor gains a deeper appreciation for the city’s unique history.
