State Representative Jesse Petrea (R-Savannah) has introduced House Bill 1105, also known as the "Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024," which aims to address sheriffs who fail to comply with Georgia's sanctuary policies. The bill proposes making it a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature for sheriffs who disregard state laws against sanctuary policies.

According to Rep. Petrea, there is a growing concern about certain sheriffs ignoring the current state laws that require them to report illegal aliens to federal immigration authorities. He emphasized the need for penalties to enforce compliance, stating, "It is inconceivable to think that a sheriff would find it appropriate to flagrantly disregard state laws while holding others accountable."

The introduction of HB 1105 comes at a time when the issue of illegal immigration has become increasingly pressing. Rep. Petrea highlighted the alarming influx of an estimated 10 million illegal aliens entering the country in the last three years alone. He also drew attention to the fact that Georgia's state prisons currently house 1,579 criminal illegals with ICE Detainers, many of whom are charged with violent crimes such as child molestation, murder, rape, and aggravated child molestation.

HB 1105 has been assigned to the House Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security for further review. The full text of the bill can be found on the official website.

In response to the proposed legislation, some have voiced their support for stronger enforcement of Georgia's sanctuary laws. Others, however, have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the bill on immigrant communities.

As the bill moves through the legislative process, it remains to be seen how it will be received and whether it will ultimately become law.
