Savannah City Manager Joseph A. "Jay" Melder addressed concerns regarding significant train-related traffic delays on President Street, issuing a statement on the morning incident. The delay, lasting 52 minutes, occurred during peak traffic hours, causing vehicles to back up on major roadways such as Truman Parkway and President Street.
Melder emphasized that such delays are "unacceptable," highlighting the frustration and safety risks they pose to drivers. He stated that his office is in communication with WATCO, the rail operator responsible for the section of track involved, to seek more considerate operational practices. Melder noted that WATCO has pledged to mitigate future disruptions.
WATCO responded by committing to avoid train operations through the President Street crossing during rush hours whenever feasible. This reinforces an existing agreement with the city. Additionally, WATCO is exploring alternative inspection methods to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In their statement about Thursday's incident, WATCO explained: “This morning, the railroad encountered a delay due to mechanical issues. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and assure the community that this is not a common occurrence. Our onsite team resolved the issue as swiftly as possible. We are committed to adjusting our operational schedules to better serve the community and to being a responsible partner.”
Residents have been encouraged to report blocked crossings to the Federal Railroad Administration. Meanwhile, Chatham County is working alongside Savannah and the Coastal Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (CORE MPO) on a study aimed at eliminating the railroad crossing on President Street. They are seeking federal funding through the Federal Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program.
