Six schools from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) have been awarded funds as part of the Georgia Department of Education's Opportunity Grants. This initiative is aimed at enhancing student opportunities in fine arts, health and physical education, world languages, and summer learning programs across the state. The grants amount to a total of $1,820,804.
This marks the second distribution of Opportunity Grants. In March 2022, seven SCCPSS schools and the district collectively received $31,044 in grants. In this current round, six SCCPSS schools will receive a combined total of $15,257.
Brock Elementary, Tybee Island Maritime Academy, and West Chatham Middle School have been selected for Health and Physical Education grants. Each school may receive up to $3,000 to purchase necessary equipment for health and physical education instruction.
Savannah Arts Academy and Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career High are recipients of World Languages – Cross-Curriculum Innovation Grants. These grants aim to foster innovative connections between world language studies and other curriculum areas.
Largo-Tibet Elementary has secured a Fine Arts grant through the Fine Arts Consumables and Equipment (FACE) program. This provides up to $3,000 per teacher for supplies and equipment essential for teaching Georgia Standards of Excellence in Fine Arts.
State School Superintendent Woods emphasized Georgia's commitment to broadening educational opportunities: “Georgia is committed to expanding opportunities for students and providing an enriching educational experience in the core content areas and beyond," he stated. "These grants ensure that students across the state have access to educational opportunities that prepare them for life and keep them engaged in school."
