Alfred Ely Beach High School recently held its second annual College Decision Day, becoming the first school in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System to adopt this national trend. The event celebrated graduating seniors and recognized their decisions to enroll in post-secondary institutions, enlist in the Armed Forces, or pursue career-based employment after graduation.
The purpose of Decision Day is to acknowledge high school seniors for their postsecondary plans and motivate younger students and families to start preparing early for further education. It takes place annually around May 1, aligning with the deadline by which most seniors must inform colleges of their enrollment intentions.
Decision Day draws inspiration from the NCAA’s National Signing Day, aiming to emphasize that academic achievements deserve as much recognition as athletic ones. On National Signing Day, student-athletes announce their intent to play sports at specific colleges through press conferences and signing ceremonies. Similarly, Decision Day seeks to create excitement for all students advancing to the next stage of learning, regardless of athletic involvement.
Ms. Khalilah Watson, Athletic Director at Beach High School, played a key role in introducing this tradition locally. Principal Craig Daughtry expressed pride in celebrating students as they prepare for new challenges beyond high school.
