Thirty-five elementary students from the Savannah Chatham County Public School System participated in this year's State Science and Engineering Fair at Georgia College. The event, held on March 9, 2023, in Milledgeville, Georgia, attracted over 300 students from across the state in grades K-5. Among these participants, 21 SCCPSS students achieved first, second, or third place.
The Science and Engineering Fair offers students a platform to apply scientific inquiry by identifying problems, making observations, formulating hypotheses, and designing strategies to answer questions. This process allows them to take on roles as scientists or engineers to communicate their findings.
Projects require identifying a problem and illustrating strategies for solving it. Students engage with reading, logical thinking, writing, math, data analysis, computer science, graphic arts, and scientific methodology. Participation fosters curiosity and confidence in science and engineering.
Participation in competitions like the Georgia College Science and Engineering Fair helps students prepare for the future through public speaking and professional presentation of their ideas.
Student projects were evaluated by professional scientists, engineers, teachers, and university students. "We want to commend the following students for their hard work and dedication to advancing their own knowledge of science and engineering," states an announcement regarding the event. The statement also acknowledges the support from families, teachers, and administrators.
Congratulations are extended to competitors from Esther F. Garrison K8 School, Hodge Elementary School (ES), J.G. Smith ES, New Hampstead K8 School among others who received special awards.
