The National League of Cities (NLC) recently unveiled its leadership team for 2025, naming Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II as the Chair of the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. He was also reappointed to the NLC Board of Directors. This announcement came during NLC’s 2024 City Summit in Tampa, Florida.
Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has been elected as the NLC President. Her focus is on building resilient and inclusive communities.
In his new role, Mayor Johnson will guide efforts to create policies and advocate for resources aimed at improving public safety. This includes strengthening law enforcement-community relations and addressing challenges like violent crime prevention and emergency response. “I am honored to serve and represent Savannah in this vital role,” stated Mayor Johnson. “Public safety remains a cornerstone of thriving communities, and I look forward to working alongside fellow leaders to advance innovative solutions that protect and empower our residents.”
Other members of the NLC leadership team include Mayor Steve Patterson from Athens, Ohio, as First Vice President, and Councilmember Kevin Kramer from Louisville, Kentucky, as Second Vice President.
