The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) has introduced a new initiative to aid those affected by Hurricane Helene. The program, named Housing Emergency Assistance and Recovery Through Sheltering (HEARTS) Georgia, aims to assist residents of Savannah and Chatham County, along with individuals from 61 other counties in the state.

This state-run program is designed to offer non-congregate shelter options in hotels or motels for eligible survivors whose homes were significantly damaged or destroyed by the hurricane. The program is intended to last up to six months, focusing on transitioning survivors into long-term housing solutions while supplementing immediate recovery efforts.

Eligibility for the HEARTS Georgia program requires that survivors be registered with FEMA, seek shelter within their eligible county, have a home that is majorly damaged or uninhabitable, and agree to the program terms.

For application information, residents are directed to visit the appropriate website. Further assistance can be obtained by calling 833-575-4411 or emailing GEMA/HS’s Community Recovery Department.
