Savannah announces closures for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

City of Savannah administrative offices and facilities will close on Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Emergency services will remain operational during this period.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade is scheduled to occur in the Downtown Historic District starting at 10 a.m. on January 20. Road closures will begin at 5 a.m. at the intersection of E. Broad and Liberty Street for parade staging.

E. Broad Street between Gwinnet and Broughton will close from 10 a.m. and reopen at 3 p.m., while Broughton Street between E. Broad and MLK Jr. Blvd will be closed from 10 a.m., reopening at 4:35 p.m. Additionally, MLK Jr. Blvd between Broughton Street and Anderson Street will be closed from 10 a.m., reopening at 3 p.m.

To facilitate the parade, no parking signs will be posted in advance along the route, with towing enforced beginning at 12:01 a.m. on January 20 for vehicles parked in restricted areas.

Sanitation services are also affected by the holiday closure with changes to their schedule:

- Residential garbage collection and yard waste collection services will not operate on Monday, January 20 but will resume on Tuesday, January 21 on a one-day delayed schedule.

- Recycling services are suspended on Monday, January 20 but resume on Tuesday, January 21 running Monday’s route.

- The Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, January 20; however, Dean Forest Landfill reopens Tuesday while Bacon Park Transfer Station resumes operations Wednesday.

- Street sweeping services are canceled for Monday but return to their regular schedule on Tuesday.

Residents should refer to sanitation schedule packets provided annually to confirm service days for their routes.
