Due to the effects of a recent winter storm, the City of Savannah will keep its administrative offices and facilities closed through Thursday, January 23. The city remains under a State of Emergency until Friday, January 24.

The City Council meeting initially planned for Thursday at 2 p.m. has been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 4 at 10 a.m. It will take place at the Board of Education’s Whitney Administrative Complex on Laura Avenue.

Sanitation services will also be impacted by these closures. There will be no residential garbage, recycling, or yard waste collection on Thursday. Additionally, the Bacon Park Convenience Center and Dean Forest Landfill will remain closed through that day. Updates will be communicated as they become available.

The city's 311 call center is operational for residents needing to request services via phone or the 311SAV App. In emergencies, residents should dial 911.

Tuesday's storm resulted in one to three inches of snow and ice across Savannah. City staff are maintaining an emergency response posture through Friday due to expected low temperatures around 19 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chill values between 10 and 15 degrees.

Residents are advised to stay indoors overnight as exposure to below-freezing temperatures could result in frostbite or hypothermia. The combination of cold temperatures during Wednesday and limited melting may lead to black ice conditions on roads by Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Travel is discouraged as roadways, especially bridges and overpasses, may be hazardous.

City crews are working alongside Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Chatham County officials to treat primary roadways as needed. Residents who must travel should use the WAZE App for current road conditions and closures information.

Drivers are reminded to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before traveling and to increase following distances from other vehicles while allowing extra time for stopping. Reports have surfaced about drivers ignoring traffic signals; therefore, compliance with traffic control devices is urged by city officials.

Live Oak Public Libraries will close all locations on Thursday with Friday operations yet undecided.
