City of Savannah administrative offices and facilities will remain closed on Friday due to ongoing winter storm conditions. The city plans to fully reopen on Monday, January 27.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday's forecast predicts slightly higher temperatures with cloudy skies. However, significant melting is not expected due to low temperatures and limited sunlight. Overnight lows are anticipated to drop below freezing, leading to refreezing snow and ice accumulation.
The City’s Transportation Department is actively working to clear primary roadways. "Residents are strongly urged to limit all travel Thursday evening and Friday," officials said, emphasizing the dangers of black ice, which can form following a thaw-refreeze pattern.
Residents needing to travel should use the WAZE App for updates on road closures. Sanitation services have been suspended through Friday due to hazardous conditions but are expected to resume on Monday. The Bacon Park transfer station and Dean Forest Landfill will remain closed until further notice.
The Tompkins Regional Center and John Delaware Center will operate as warming centers starting at 7 p.m. Thursday night until 10 a.m. Friday morning. These centers aim to provide shelter for the unhoused in collaboration with Chatham County and the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless.
Other closures include Live Oak Public Libraries on Friday, January 24, with Saturday operations yet undecided. The Cinema Savannah film screening scheduled for this evening has been canceled.
The city's 311 call center remains operational for service requests via phone or the 311SAV App. For emergencies, residents should dial 911. Updates and safety tips regarding winter weather can be found on the city’s official Facebook page and Instagram @cityofsavannah.
