Mayor Van R. Johnson II | City of Savannah
The City of Savannah, in collaboration with Designing Local, Ethos Preservation, and W Projects, is set to launch its Public Art Master Plan. The event will take place on February 11 at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center.
The initiative aims to integrate public art into the community as part of a broader goal to enhance access to the arts for all residents. This effort includes establishing a public art program and ordinance for the city. "Supporting Savannah’s arts and cultural vitality has long been a priority for the City," said City Manager Jay Melder. He added that the plan would serve as a roadmap for creating an inclusive public art program.
Designing Local, known for its expertise in arts and culture planning, began community engagement events across Savannah's Aldermanic Districts in January. These meetings will continue through March. Stuart Miller, Director of Cultural Resources, emphasized the role of public art in storytelling: "Public art provides a way for residents to tell their stories through artwork that both commemorates and inspires."
Residents are encouraged to participate by completing an online survey or attending virtual and in-person workshops. Feedback from these activities will inform how public art can be realized throughout Savannah.
The launch event details are as follows:
- Date: Tuesday, February 11
- Time: 11:30 a.m.
- Location: Savannah Cultural Arts Center, 201 Montgomery St.
