The City of Savannah has appointed Jimmie H. Johnson, IV as the Director of the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) after a nationwide recruitment process. Johnson previously served the City of Memphis for 13 years, where he led the Group Violence Intervention Program (GVIP). This program focused on identifying individuals at risk of becoming involved in gun violence and providing them with alternative resources.

City Manager Jay Melder expressed enthusiasm about Johnson's appointment, stating, "I am excited for the wealth of knowledge and experience Mr. Johnson brings to Team Savannah. Our ONSE office is an integral part of the success of our goals to increase public safety and build stronger communities."

Johnson also brings 15 years of law enforcement experience from Memphis and Bartlett, Tennessee, having served as both a Crisis Intervention Officer and Field Training Officer.

The ONSE was established in 2022 with a mission to implement crime reduction strategies and enhance neighborhood safety through community collaboration. The office provides grants to organizations that support initiatives such as credible messengers, violence interrupters, conflict management, out-of-school activities, and mentoring programs.
