Nearly 50 leaders from the business, government, and nonprofit sectors in Savannah recently traveled to Charleston as part of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce's new LEADS (Learn, Engage, Advance, Develop, Succeed) Trip series. This initiative aims to foster regional collaboration by addressing shared challenges in economic development, transportation, tourism, and housing.
Prominent officials such as Chatham County Commission Chairman Chester Ellis, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, and Tybee Island Mayor Brian West were among those who participated in the trip. Their presence facilitated meaningful discussions with Charleston counterparts on regional issues.
Bert Brantley, President & CEO of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of these interactions: “We often host groups from other cities looking to learn from Savannah’s success, but it’s just as important that we seek out new perspectives and best practices to bring back home. This trip was an opportunity to listen, collaborate, and explore solutions that benefit both regions.”
The event included expert-led panels and networking sessions where attendees exchanged ideas on transportation infrastructure, workforce housing, and sustainable tourism. A key moment was a City-to-City panel discussion featuring insights from Mayor Van Johnson and Charleston City Council Member Michael Seekings on managing economic growth while preserving community identity.
The Chamber is already planning its next LEADS trip for September in Nashville. The three-day event will focus on learning from leaders in areas such as tourism, childcare, and transportation funding.
The Chamber thanked event chair Sam McCachren of Thomas & Hutton along with sponsors and participants for their contributions to the initiative's success. Programs like LEADS are seen as vital for fostering regional partnerships crucial for shaping Savannah's future.
