City of Savannah issued the following announcement on Aug. 5.

The City of Savannah has launched the request for proposals process for the Water Works Pedestrian Walkway Mural project. The Water Works Pedestrian Walkway will be a mural painted directly onto the asphalt of the Water Works Pump House site, which is adjacent to the EnMarket Arena and the developing Canal District. The walkway will feature the work of four artist teams and will connect the north end of the site at the new EnMarket Arena to the south end of the site at Gwinnett Street.

Spanning almost 700 feet, this mural project will be the largest asphalt mural in Chatham County and one of the largest asphalt murals in Georgia. Each of the four murals is 120 feet by 20 feet, approximately 2,400 square feet total. 

"This mural is quite historic in not only its size but the opportunity to represent the incredible creative talent Savannah has to offer," said Stuart Miller, director of the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Resources. "It will be the visual centerpiece for one of the largest site activations the city has ever produced, and we are thrilled to bring it to a local level that will truly represent the community."

Nearly 130 years ago, the Savannah Water Works Pump House began treating the city's water supply at the corner of Gwinnett Street and Stiles Avenue. The City of Savannah recently nominated the Savannah Water Works Pump House to the National Register of Historic Places, expressing a clear desire to preserve the existing historic structure while enhancing the surrounding lot for environmental, social and economic benefits.
