The City has issued a recommendation for residents to take measures to winterize their water pipes as cold weather approaches. As temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s on multiple nights this week, residents are advised to let faucets drip overnight and each night when temperatures fall below freezing. This measure helps keep water moving and prevents it from becoming stagnant in the pipes.

Residents should also close and drain any outdoor faucets and use faucet covers for protection. Insulating pipes is highlighted as the most effective way to prevent them from freezing, with caulking suggested to seal cracks around pipes on walls both inside and outside.

Thermostats should be set to at least 50°F, even if homes are vacant. It is also recommended that cupboards and vanities be left open overnight to help keep pipes warm. Residents are further advised to keep outside valves open as freezing weather approaches, allowing any remaining water in the pipes to expand without causing damage.

A cold front is expected in the region starting tonight, prompting these precautions. In addition to safeguarding pipes, residents are reminded of additional measures for people, pets, and plants during freezing conditions:

- Limit time outdoors for both people and pets.

- Check on elderly or vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors.

- Cover plants before temperatures drop below freezing.
