Savannah State University  issued the following announcement on Jan. 18.

Public Safety Day is open to the campus community.

Savannah State University (SSU) will host Public Safety Day, a campus-wide event for its students, faculty and staff on Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The expo-style event will take place on campus in the John F. Kennedy Fine Arts Building parking area, with ten municipalities in attendance. The goal is to inform the SSU community about safety measures on campus, and to continue the critical dialogue between students and public safety officers. Several demonstrations are taking place throughout the day, including at 1 p.m., the controlled burning of a 4-foot building to simulate a residence hall on fire.

The university’s Department of Public Safety has partnered with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to display a vehicle involved in a rollover accident during the event, to simulate the devastating actions of distracted driving. In addition, the GOHS and Bryan County Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Task Force, as well as two K-9 Units, will also be on site. Attendees can participate in fire extinguisher training, and a DUI Simulator complete with alcohol impairment goggles to demonstrate the dangerous effects of drunk driving.

Organized by Savannah State University’s Emergency Management Coordinator, Sarah Toole, the event aims to raise awareness of emergency management resources available in the neighboring community.

“It is important for not only our students to know which agencies surround our campus, but faculty and staff too,” said Toole. “It’s a soft reminder in the event something happens on our campus, there are resources available.”

The Department of Public Safety is committed to providing a safe and secure environment by consistently seeking and finding ways to promote, preserve and deliver a systematic approach to security, safety, and quality of service to students, faculty, staff and visitors to the campus community.

Public Safety Day also serves as a recruitment and networking opportunity for Savannah State’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and Criminal Justice majors.
