Savannah Standard

The City of Savannah, along with other cities in Georgia, has been granted a significant sum of $156 million by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enhance residential solar programs. The grant is part of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s Solar for All program and will be distributed over five years.

Mayor Van R. Johnson, II expressed gratitude for the investment, stating, “This grant is an incredible investment towards our 100% Savannah Plan and our goal to focus on equitable clean energy for all.” The Georgia BRIGHT Communities Coalition, which includes Savannah, Atlanta, Decatur, and numerous other partners, worked together to secure the grant.

City Manager Joseph A. “Jay” Melder highlighted the city's commitment to clean energy initiatives, saying, “Following the direction of City Council and the 100% Savannah Plan we have made serious investments in clean energy programs to benefit our city’s residents.”

The grant will support various initiatives, including residential solar and battery leases, a free solar program for low-income households, and a community benefit solar program for nonprofits, schools, and local governments. It will also facilitate utility-led community solar programs, workforce training, economic development, pre-solar home repairs, community education, and capacity building.

The City of Savannah and its partners are set to engage in award negotiations over the coming months. Once the funds are allocated, the Coalition will involve the community and stakeholders in guiding the design and implementation of the programs.
