SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah’s Recreation and Leisure Services Department has introduced girls flag football to its youth athletic programs, with various opportunities available this summer.
The inaugural regular season, which is open to girls in grades three through six, will begin on June 10. Practices are set to start in the week of May 27. Additionally, a free skills clinic for kindergarteners to sixth graders is scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Registration for both the clinic and the regular season is now open. The deadline for regular season registration is May 5.
The first skills clinic took place on April 5, featuring instruction from City staff and former Atlanta Falcons players—Robert Moore, Bobby Butler, and Buddy Curry—as part of the NFL’s Females in Flag community outreach initiative.
Girls flag football is growing in popularity across the United States. The NFL is supporting the sport through initiatives like the Flag 50, promoted in a Super Bowl commercial. In some states, girls flag football has been sanctioned officially as a high-school sport, fostering league development and competition.
This non-contact, fast-paced version of football focuses on athleticism, teamwork, and inclusivity. Instead of tackling, players remove flags from opponents’ belts, providing a safer environment while still promoting agility, strategy, and leadership.
The upcoming season will run for six weeks and conclude with a tournament championship. Volunteer coaches are invited to participate in this inaugural season, and registration fees have been reduced for City residents.
The skills clinic on May 3 will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Morris Field, 1500 E. Victory Drive, and is free for kindergarten to sixth-grade participants. The regular season is planned for May 27 to August 2, with a cost of $30 for residents and $50 for non-residents.
